For most of my life, I struggled to make sense of how much contradiction exists in a species supposedly this intelligent. We produce more food than ever and still have hunger. We invent technology to save time and somehow feel perpetually short of it. We build economic systems to serve human beings and regularly find human beings spending most of their waking lives serving the systems instead. For a long time I tried to explain this as a problem of bad people — greedy executives, corrupt politicians, predatory corporations, some ideology or another. There’s obviously truth in that; plenty of people behave badly, and powerful individuals cause real damage. But it never fully satisfied me, because the same patterns keep showing up across wildly different countries, cultures, and eras, and replacing the people in charge so rarely changes the underlying behavior. That’s not what you’d expect if the problem were simply a cast of villains.
Systems theory gave me a better way of seeing it. When enough individual parts interact, the behavior of the whole can become something none of the individual parts intended. Nobody wakes up wanting to create a traffic jam — every driver is making a perfectly reasonable individual decision — yet thousands of those decisions, interacting on a shared road network, produce an outcome almost everyone hates, with no committee coordinating it. A single ant, similarly, is barely capable of thought; a colony of them, each blindly following a few chemical cues, builds and defends and reroutes itself with what looks, from outside, like intention. The intelligence isn’t in any individual part. It’s in the pattern the parts make together.
That’s the sense in which I find the idea of a human superorganism useful — not literally, as though some giant creature has grown a brain and started directing civilization, but as a way of seeing the pattern. Billions of people, each trying to survive, raise families, gain status, and respond to whatever incentives are nearby, connected through markets, governments, corporations, and inherited stories, running for generations — what emerges is something far more complicated than any individual could design or control, and nobody has to be steering it for it to develop real momentum of its own.
Take a corporation. The people inside it can be genuinely decent — a manager who cares about their team, an executive who wants to build something useful, investors just trying to fund their retirement. Put all of them inside a system that rewards growth, market share, and cost reduction, though, and the organization starts behaving in fairly predictable ways regardless of who’s running it: it grows, cuts costs, automates what it can, competes hard, sometimes at a human cost nobody involved particularly enjoys. Not because everyone quietly became evil, but because the incentives around them reward certain behaviors and punish others, and an organization that ignores those pressures for long tends to get replaced by one that doesn’t. The same feedback shows up almost everywhere — a politician who ignores elections stops being a politician, a family carrying heavy debt can’t simply decide money no longer matters. Every participant is responding reasonably to what’s immediately in front of them. The combined responses produce a larger system that starts to feel, from inside, like it has priorities of its own — growth, consumption, competition, more — even though the system itself doesn’t literally want anything at all.
This also reframed how I think about hierarchy and inequality. I used to picture the pyramid as something imposed deliberately from the top. I think the real picture is messier: money tends to generate more money, ownership tends to generate income, scale tends to reduce costs, and success in one generation tends to hand the next one a head start. None of that makes inequality inevitable or impossible to counteract — but it does mean concentrations of wealth and power don’t require a conspiracy to form. Feedback loops can build a pyramid all on their own, and the people who end up at the top of one have an obvious incentive to protect the arrangement that put them there. That’s a more useful explanation to me than either extreme — a secret cabal running everything, or nobody having any disproportionate power at all. Both can be partly true. Powerful people can absolutely manipulate pieces of the system, while the system as a whole still runs beyond the full control of any one of them.
Once I started seeing civilization this way, a question that used to feel central to me — who do we blame for this mess — started feeling like the wrong question. A more useful one is: what incentives, stories, and feedback loops keep producing it? That doesn’t let anyone off the hook — people still make choices, and people with more power reasonably carry more responsibility for theirs. But blaming individuals alone keeps us from seeing the machinery underneath them, and if the machinery is doing most of the work, replacing one driver while leaving every incentive untouched changes less than it feels like it should.
This is also where the idea of a sovereign life stops being philosophical and starts being practical. I can’t personally control the superorganism I’m living inside — I’m not outside it any more than you are; we both use the banks, drive the roads, work for the organizations, pay the taxes. But I can understand its currents, notice where it’s quietly making decisions for me, and gradually build enough room in my own life that I’m not simply obeying every signal it sends by default.
Which raises the real question this whole book is circling toward: when our old evolutionary instincts, our inherited stories, and these enormous feedback loops all reinforce each other at once, what actually gets produced? That’s where the strange arrangements I’ve come to call human idiocies come from — and it’s why so much of modern life eventually seems to sort itself into some version of a pyramid.
