Making Sense of How Evolution Happened

If the universe can apparently keep running without anyone visibly steering it, the next question that fascinates me is how something as complicated as us ever emerged from it — how you get from matter to life, from simple life to complex organisms, and eventually to a creature that can build cities, invent religions, split atoms, and then spend an afternoon wondering what the point of its own existence is. Evolution gives us at least part of that answer, though it’s worth being honest about what it does and doesn’t explain. It doesn’t tell us how the first life began — how non-living chemistry crossed into the first self-replicating forms is still a separate, incompletely understood question. What evolution explains is what happened once life capable of reproducing already existed.

Strip away the terminology and the idea is almost embarrassingly simple. Living things reproduce, but their offspring aren’t perfect copies — variation happens. Some of those variations get inherited. Depending on the environment, some variations make an organism a little more likely to survive and reproduce than others. Run that process for an almost incomprehensible number of generations, and small differences compound into very large ones. Nobody’s sitting on a committee deciding an animal could use longer legs or better eyesight. Variation happens. The environment filters it. What works well enough to reproduce keeps going.

There’s something in this that connects directly back to the question from the last chapter: evolution doesn’t need to know where it’s going. There’s no final version it’s obviously working toward, no march toward greater wisdom or happiness or moral goodness. It just keeps producing organisms that manage, one way or another, to keep participating. And “survival of the fittest” doesn’t mean the strongest wins some brutal contest — sometimes competition helps, sometimes cooperation helps, sometimes caution helps, sometimes aggression helps. What survives depends entirely on circumstances.

Humans turned out to be an especially interesting result of that process, because we’re intensely social animals. Our ancestors didn’t survive as isolated individuals — survival depended on other people, and being rejected by the group could be close to a death sentence. So it’s no surprise that modern humans remain extraordinarily sensitive to belonging, status, approval, fairness, and what other people think of us. We cooperate beautifully under some conditions and compete ferociously under others, sometimes within the same afternoon.

None of that means every irritating human behavior can be waved away as “just evolution,” and it’s worth being careful here about a trap that’s easy to fall into: something being natural is not the same as something being good. Evolution had no obligation to produce creatures perfectly suited to the world we actually live in now — it only had to produce creatures capable of surviving the environments they evolved in, and those environments looked almost nothing like modern life. For most of human existence we lived in small groups, resources were scarce, danger was real, and the number of people we could even compare ourselves against was tiny. Then, in what amounts to an evolutionary blink, we built something completely different — agriculture, cities, money, states, religions, markets, corporations, mass media, the internet — and dropped an animal shaped over an immense stretch of time straight into the middle of it.

That mismatch matters more than it sounds like it should. A taste for calorie-rich food made sense when food was scarce; put the same instinct in a world that can manufacture unlimited amounts of it, and the outcome changes completely. Status-sensitivity inside a small tribe made sense; connect that same sensitivity to advertising, consumer credit, and billions of people broadcasting their lives online, and something very different happens. An impulse to accumulate resources made sense as security against uncertainty; place that same impulse inside financial systems where accumulation can continue almost without limit, and the consequences compound into something the instinct never evolved to handle. None of this makes the underlying instinct evil or stupid. It just means the environment around it changed far faster than we did.

Here’s where it becomes directly relevant to everything else in this book. Humans developed one more remarkable ability on top of all this: we can create and transmit ideas. Instead of waiting thousands of generations for genetic change, a human can learn something and hand it to someone else almost immediately. Customs spread. Technologies spread. And stories spread — a story can pass from one mind to another, outlive its author by centuries, and quietly shape the behavior of millions of people who will never meet each other. Religions do this. Nations do this. Money does this. Ideas about success, careers, and status do this. Once enough people accept a particular story, it starts shaping the environment the next generation is born into — and that generation doesn’t experience it as something a previous generation invented. They experience it simply as how the world works.

That’s the moment biological evolution quietly hands the baton to something else. A highly social, storytelling creature starts building cultures and institutions around itself, those systems shape the behavior of the humans inside them, and the humans keep recreating the systems in turn — everything feeding back into everything else, until looking at individual behavior alone stops being enough to explain what happens next. You can have perfectly reasonable people making perfectly reasonable individual decisions and still end up with a collective outcome nobody actually chose. No villain has to be running it. No secret meeting is required. The outcome can simply emerge from the interactions themselves — which is exactly the lens that finally made a lot of what looks like human madness start making sense to me.
